2019 Maine Retired Skippers Race
Welcome to the 2019 Maine Retired Skippers Race Information page.

Board of Directors of Maine Retired Skippers Race Announce:

Our 68th annual sail boat race will be held on Penobscot Bay. Featuring cruising boats from 25 feet LOD to
an unlimited length steered by skippers who are at least 65 years old.

Boat owners who do not have such a skipper and are desirous of racing, we may be able to connect you
with a skipper. We currently have at least two skipper’s interested in racing your boat; please contact
Secretary, Lew Payne, at 207-843-7935, for contact information.

The race format is a “pursuit race”. The racecourse is a twelve-mile triangle, which begins at the entrance to
Castine harbor. Yachts will be started at different times depending upon their handicaps. In other words, all
time allowances are applied at the start, assigning a different starting time to each yacht, reflecting her
speed potential. The slowest boats start first and the fastest last. Every skipper's objective is to pass all those
ahead and to be first to cross the finish line, showing he has gotten the most out of his sailing vessel, be she
large or small.

Since its inception, the purpose of this race has been to allow retired skippers to show their boat handling skills at the
helm of sailing vessels designed primarily for cruising. While race boats are not expressly excluded, each vessel is
expected to contain full cruising amenities for a boat its size. The race committee may make random inspections to
see that this is the case.

Boat handicaps follow the PHRF model. Boats without a valid PHRF certificate will be assigned a rating by the Race
Committee. Please fill in all information on the rating sheet included in this registration packet. We need your boat’s
dimensions even if you have proven them previously and even if you have a PHRF rating. If you have a PHRF
handicap sheet or any other rating sheets, please send us a copy.

The morning of the race, coffee and donuts will be available followed by a skippers meeting. Coordinates of the race
marks will be given out at this meeting.
