A Message to CYC Members & Friends:
While our community mourns the loss of our clubhouse, we are reaching out today to share our vision for the coming racing season. We can put it quite plainly - it is the goal of CYC’s members and staff to move forward with the 2024 racing program as planned. We know that there will be some logistical changes to the hospitality we are able to offer, but we are certain that the comradery and fun that have been such a presence in all our lives will continue to show up, but only with your support. The process we go through in the coming weeks and months will present challenges and opportunities, but we hope that our racing community will be along for the ride.

CYC is actively monitoring the incoming weather for this weekend. In the event of a Small Craft Advisory, we may move the Championship Fleet inside the Marina del Rey Harbor. Our primary concern is for the safety of the sailors, coaches and race committee. If you have any questions, please contact regatta chair Brenna Vincent (contact info above).

For more than 50 years, Star sailors
have come to California Yacht Club
to vie for the King of Spain trophy, the
sterling silver Spanish galleon that was
presented to CYC by the King of Spain
in 1928. Past winners are a virtual who’s
who in sailing, counting World Champions
and Olympic medalists among the ranks.
Santa Monica Bay offers some of its best
sailing conditions in early summer, so com-
petitors can expect sunny, warm days and
mid-afternoon breezes in the 10 to 15 knot range. Post-race hospitality is sure to refuel the
hardiest sailors after a competitive day on the water.

  • WOMEN ON THE WATER/WOMAN AT THE HELM REGATTA: AUG 10 - 11
    • Saturday and Sunday, Aug 10 - 11, 2024

The Women on the Water/Woman at the Helm Regatta (WOW/WAH) is a community effort, with multiple clubs in the marina helping out to make the event a success. Cal's role in the event is to take care of race management.  You'll see our race committee boat, the Charles Hathaway, as well as our mark-set boats and equipment, out on the course.

The regatta has two primary divisions: all women crew (WOW) and a coed crew with a female skipper (WAH). Go to the WOW/WAH official notice board for race documents, a link to registration, a list of competitors, and results.

      A little history:
The Women on the Water (WOW) Series began in the early 1970s with the “Ladies Got Guts Race” to the Isthmus at Catalina Island. Organized by Stan Lieberman and sponsored by Del Rey Yacht Club, the event was initiated to interest women in learning more about boat handling. The enthusiasm of women for racing prompted other yacht clubs to sponsor their own “Women Only” events. These races became organized as a series in the late 1970s when then California Yacht Club Commodore Robert S. Wilson donated an antique silver loving cup to be awarded to the top woman sailor in Santa Monica Bay. In 2002 WSA donated a crystal sailboat perpetual trophy for the winner of the Woman at the Helm (WAH) division with the most entries. In 2005 a Martin 242 half model perpetual trophy was dedicated in memory of Cheryl Rembert, an active Santa Monica Bay area sailor. The Cheryl Rembert Memorial Award is given to the top placing Martin 242 in the WOW division.

      King of the Hill

The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared “King of the Hill” for that year.

Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in 21 invited boats.

The winner will be awarded the King of the Hill trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club. The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.

      Sunset Series Cruising Championship

New in 2021, the Sunset Series Cruising Championship is an end-of-the-season race run the same evening as King of the Hill in which the “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Cruising Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared the “Sunset Series Cruising Champion” for that year.

Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 2-4 boats in each class of the Cruising Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Millard Rosing trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Cruising Division) to result in 8 invited boats.

The winner will be awarded the Sunset Series Cruising Championship Trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club.
